All About Bali

Suggested Reading

The following books provide the visitor to Bali with basic information about the island and its traditions:

A House in Bali. Colin McPhee, O. U. P.

Bali Handbook. Bill Dalton, Moon Publications

Island of Bali. Miguel Covarrubias, Kegan Paul

Bali; Island of the Gods. Ed. E.Oey, Passport Books

Knopf Guide to Bali, Knopf

Bali & Lombok, DK Eyewitness Travel Guides

McPhee and Covarrubias are classics that every serious visitor should read. Dalton's Bali Handbook is an excellent general introduction to the island (the 1997 edition contains 715 pages!).  The Knopf guide is outstanding, being beautifully illustrated and containing contributions from the leading authorities on Bali. It is now available in large format as well as a smaller pocket edition.  The Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness guide is the most recent publication, beautifully illustrated and very authoritative.

Further Reading

The modern guidebooks all contain bibliographies for those wishing to delve more deeply into Balinese history, religion and culture.  The Dorling Kindersley guide is perhaps the most up-to-date and comprehensive, but  new academic studies are being published each year.

Articles about Bali

The following unpublished articles provide a personal, and sometimes light-hearted, look at  aspects of Bali, Balinese culture and early history.
