Scott, MA is a published poet, writer and clinical
hypnotherapist. As an RN and developmental specialist
she has worked for many years with children with Down Syndrome and other
special needs.
A long-time resident of Berkeley, California, Joyce has dedicated her
life to helping mothers and children. As an advocate for people
with disabilities she has appeared on television, addressed conferences
and clubs, and spoken at museum and gallery openings. In 2010
Joyce was guest speaker at the VSA conference at the Kennedy Center in
Washington, DC. In 2009 she was invited to address the
International Down Syndrome Congress in Dublin.
Joyce serves on the advisory board of Creative Growth, the first art
center in the world for artists with
disabilities. She is a founding director of Birthways, a referral
and educational service for pregnant women and new mothers. She is
also founder of the Bali Children's Project, a non-profit dedicated to
providing educational opportunities for young people in
rural Bali.
Joyce
Scott is the twin sister of Judith Scott (1943-2005), the artist whose
fiber sculptures have won for her international acclaim.
Famed for the power and originality of her work, Judith's creativity
only manifested itself after she gained her freedom following thirty-five years of oblivion in
a state institution, where she had been sent in childhood with Down Syndrome and
severe but undiagnosed
deafness.
Joyce Scott's forthcoming book, EnTWINed, recounts Judith's improbable story
in depth and explores the extraordinary impact she has had on the
lives of those around her.
