Ground Squirrel and Rattlesnake
Where Ground Squirrels and Rattlesnakes co-exist, the squirrels acquire an immunity to the snake's venom, although the new-born squirrels can make a tasty meal. Female squirrels, as seen here, taunt an approaching snake, kicking dirt in its
face to lure it away from the den.
In this lucky shot, dirt is still airborne, the snake has started to strike with
its jaws open, and the squirrel is leaping backwards emitting a warning cry.
Although high-speed strobes were used to freeze movement, the camera was
hand-held and timing done by eye. Luck also played a part!
